Harvard hopes that it can create 3D models and virtual working tours that mean everyone can walk around the pyramids, even if they aren’t there in person. There will also be plenty of interactive services to learn all about the history of the area.
Plenty to see
Thankfully, Harvard has plenty to see during their virtual tour of the Pyramids of Giza as researchers have created the three largest pyramids so far. The Great Pyramid built in 2550 BCE by King Khufu is one of the many on the list and is thought to be the only surviving Ancient Seven Wonders of the World. In fact, there have been arguments that some of the wonders didn’t exist in the first place, making this pyramid even more special. The other two pyramids on offer are the Pyramid of Menkaure built for Khufu’s grandson and the Pyramid of Khafre, built for the king’s son. The best bit? The digital models are so accurate that it can be easy to forget we’re not there in person and we’ve never left the house.

As if visiting the Pyramids of Giza without leaving the house wasn’t enough already, it turns out they’re not the only things on offer during the digital tour. Yes, Digital Giza also has the Great Sphinx as a part of the tour. Although it is now the same sandy color as everything else across the landscape, there is evidence that the Sphinx could have once been yellow, blue, and red. All of this information is included on the tour, as well as the chance to look inside several extravagant tombs. All of this is complete with plenty of details about all of the sculptures and art that are found at every turn. It might not be the real thing, but taking a digital tour of the pyramids of Giza is the next best thing for those wanting to learn a little more about the area.
