When it comes to elite soccer competitions, the one that most players want to get their hands on is the European Champions League. While the World Cup is an iconic competition, the best of the best soccer teams play in the Champions League. To win it once is impressive, but these teams have won it multiple times, becoming the most successful Champions League teams in the process.
Ajax – 4 titles
Dutch club Ajax became a big success thanks to one man and his particular love of a brand of soccer. Johan Cruyff revolutionized the way soccer was played thanks to his ‘Total Football’ approach. This fluid system brought immense success to his beloved Ajax team in the 1970s, winning it three years in a row from 1971 to 1973. Many years after that team’s success Ajax won its fourth Champions League trophy in 1995, cementing its legacy as one of the all-time greats.
Bayern Munich – 5 titles
Historically, Bayern Munich is the powerhouse of the German Bundesliga. That dominance in Germany hasn’t always translated to success on the continent, but Munich is still one of the most impressive teams in Europe. Bayern Munich has won the Champions League five times throughout its history, setting itself up to be one of the biggest franchises in the world. The most recent Champions League title Munich won came in 2013 when the team beat its domestic rival Borussia Dortmund in the final.
Barcelona – 5 titles
In recent years Barcelona has emerged as one of the biggest sports clubs in the world. Thanks in large to Lionel Messi, millions of soccer fans around the world follow Barcelona. The team had only won one champions league before 2006, before winning four between then and 2015. Although Barcelona is a huge name in soccer, it hasn’t won the Champions League in what must feel like an age for its fans.
Liverpool – 6 titles
Liverpool is the most successful British club in the Champions League with six victories. Most of the club’s success came in the 1970s and 1980s, before that dramatic final against A.C. Milan in 2005. Liverpool won the Champions League in 2019 and is the current holders of the trophy, with this year’s champion yet to be decided.
A.C. Milan – 7 titles
Historically, A.C. Milan is a giant club, despite the fact it currently has fallen on hard times. The most recent Champions League victory for Milan came in 2007 when they avenged their dramatic loss on penalties to Liverpool. Milan has won the Champions League seven times so far but without much hope of returning to Europe’s elite competition any time soon, the wait to add more continues.
Real Madrid – 13 titles
Real Madrid holds the most Champions League titles in Europe with 13. This is almost double the number of any other team, and it’s going to be hard for anyone to surpass the Spanish giants. Madrid recently won three Champions in a row, and are well-positioned to add more before anyone else tries catching them up.
