Some players sign for an NFL franchise and stay there for life, though sometimes it doesn’t work out, and players are free to leave. The free agent market gets deeper every year, and the 2019 candidates are some of the best players in recent seasons. These are the players most teams will be looking to snap up in the free agent market in 2019.
DeMarcus Lawrence, defensive end
Last year Lawrence was given the franchise tag by the Cowboys, after a breakout 2017. Lawrence hit 10.5 sacks last season which is down from 14.5 the season before. At 26 years old there is plenty of time on Lawrence’s side, and thanks to the pressure he puts on his opponents, he is sure to be hot property.
Over the last two seasons, he has pressured opposing quarterbacks a total of 142 times. It’s likely that come the 2019 season he’ll be hitting double-digit sacks once again.
Dee Ford, outside linebacker
Pressure has become so important in football that any player capable of applying it is wanted. Dee Ford is better than most at applying that pressure as a linebacker, hitting double-digit sacks twice in three years. If the Chiefs don’t stick a franchise tag on Ford, it will be a free-for-all to seal his signature.
Le’Veon Bell, running back
Bell is one of those players that could have a Hall of Fame career if he stays consistent and injury-free. Following a contract dispute, he has sat out a lot of game time, which means his huge talent seems to be going to waste.
Bell has recorded three seasons with over 1,200 rushing yards and in three of four full seasons has scored eight or more rushing touchdowns. This player is seemingly able to predict the future and is always in the right place at the right time. Most teams would be crazy not to be in for Bell.
Earl Thomas, free safety
Earl Thomas has been in the NFL for several seasons and made a name for himself as one of the best safeties ever. He looks set for a Hall of Fame place when he retires, but he needs to put the injuries behind him. If he can find a regular spot on the field with his new team, then Thomas will be one of the best free agents of 2019.
Grady Jarrett, defensive tackle
Grady Jarrett turns up the pressure from the inside and does not stop improving. He has been with the Falcons since 2015 and just last year created 135 pressures. Jarrett is so effective his coach can leave an extra player to form the block as Jarrett takes care of the blitz alone. Thanks to his potential, teams will be lining up to sign him at whatever salary he wants.
These players will have the pick of several teams during the offseason. Their great plays over the past few seasons have meant competition for their signatures will be fierce, and it’s where the player’s agents will really earn their money.
