One of the great things about pro sports is that even if your favorite team has a bad year, there’s always hope for the following season. These rookies are looking to show to the world they deserve to be in MLB and give their fans something to cheer by going for Rookie of the Year.
Luis Robert – Chicago White Sox
The strength of Luis Robert’s hitting could put him in contention to be one of the most impressive rookies in the league in 2020. During his first two seasons with the White Sox, Robert has been struggling to overcome injury, but he seems to be putting that all behind him now. Robert had a breakout last year, hitting 32 homers, and he looks set to keep adding to that tally once the 2020 MLB season is underway. The prospect also had 36 stolen bases last season, so expect him to be the difference-maker in several games this year.
Brendan McKay – Tampa Bay Rays
Pitcher Brendan McKay impressed his coaches at the Tampa Bay Rays so much during his minor league career he was called up to the majors in June of last year. McKay was the number four overall pick in 2017, and he is beginning to show baseball fans what all the fuss was about. He is expected to become a rotational option from the opening day of the 2020 MLB season. If he gets into a good rhythm early in the season, he could be a standout pick for Rookie of the Year.
Jesus Luzardo – Oakland Athletics
The only thing that prevented pitcher Jesus Luzardo from establishing himself in the league last season was an early shoulder injury. Luzardo fought back from that injury to stake a claim for a place on the roster later in the season for the A’s. The pitcher made a handful of relief appearances during the 2019 season, but he is expected to be a solid rotation option for 2020. Long term, he is going to be a starter, and if he performs like he knows he can, his break out could be this year.
Gavin Lux – LA Dodgers
Gavin Lux appears to have proven himself in the minor leagues, and is all set to make the step up in 2020. The big hitter got a little taste of the majors last year, when he was at bat nine times during the postseason. His experience of the big leagues could give him the edge over other young prospects this year as he looks set to continue his amazing form from last season. The Dodgers have a pretty deep roster, but as long as Lux makes it to bat, he’s going to bring his big hitting and super speed.
Getting into an MLB team might feel like a win for some young stars, but these prospects want to shine the brightest. They are all likely to fight for the honor of being called Rookie of the Year in the 2020 season, and will make a ton of fans along the way.
