Exploring a new destination for the first time can be incredibly exciting. However, it can also be quite daunting, especially if the spot you’re visiting is in a foreign country. If you’re feeling that way about an upcoming trip to Santorini, though, don’t worry. There are plenty of tips and tricks to make your vacation relatively stress-free.

The best place to stay
When it comes to accommodation, you’ll want to focus your attention on the west of the island, as this is the most commercially developed part of Santorini. Fira, Firostefani, and Imerovigli draw a fair amount of attention, particularly the former, because it’s the capital. However, you could also explore some of what the south has to offer, as lodgings down here are steadily growing in number. Wherever you stay, though, you’re going to have stunning views.

The best things to do here
If you enjoy a drink, Santorini definitely isn’t a bad place to be. The island has its fair share of vineyards here, which offer tasting sessions – and sometimes food – for a reasonable price. For those who don’t wish to drink their vacation away, perhaps some of Santorini’s historical landmarks will be more to your liking. There’s Akrotiri, home to a city destroyed by a volcano thousands of years ago, as well as the Museum of Prehistoric Thera. Other places worth visiting include an open-air cinema and a microbrewery, with the island’s cooking classes an absolute must if you’re a foodie.

The best time to travel
Santorini is typically at its best in the summer months. Of course, this is also when the island is busier and more expensive because it’s when people are on summer vacation. That’s why it’s probably best to avoid the island in July and August. You can ensure your first trip here isn’t tainted by crowds and high prices by traveling in May or September instead. April and October are also a possibility, though you may find the weather more questionable and the available activities scarcer. Saying that, though, Santorini is aiming to become a year-round destination, so traveling in these months might not actually be a bad idea.

The best spots for views
Pretty much the entirety of Santorini is great for views. However, some spots offer more to see than others. The village of Oia is always popular with tourists because of its scenery, with many people coming here later in the day. That’s because it’s one of the best places to watch the sunset on a sunny day. The caldera edge on the west is also amazing, offering plenty to see as you go for a walk. Just be aware that if you plan on traversing the entire thing, it’ll take you quite a while.
There’s no need to be overwhelmed whenever you go somewhere new. While it’s easy to feel lost or unsure of what to do in such a location, the internet is definitely your friend. You can familiarize yourself with the entire island of Santorini before you even hop on a plane.
