Estonia is a true winter wonderland at this time of year
Estonia really looks a treat in the winter, and that alone makes it worth visiting. The snow-covered roofs of this country’s intriguing architecture will have you thinking that you’ve walked into a fantasy world. Of course, the snow brings more benefits than just some pretty pictures. You can enjoy plenty of great winter activities, including snowshoeing, ice skating, and kick-sledding. There’s also Tallinn’s magical festive Christmas market and the traditional smoke sauna of Old Võromaa at Moosa. Plus, all of Estonia’s incredible restaurants, of which Michelin has apparently highlighted over 30.
Dahab, Egypt is a warm destination that’s safer than people might think
So you want to be warm this winter? In that case, why not visit Dahab in Egypt? Its proximity to the equator means that cold weather and snow aren’t something you’ll need to worry about. While you might worry about some of the violence further north of here, travel writer Rebecca Lowe assures that Dahab “could not feel more sheltered or safe.” Here, you can spend your winter exploring the waters – either above or below the surface – and enjoy glorious sunshine day after day. That’s probably not something you’ll find back home at this time of year.
Pittsfield, Massachusetts, is an excellent winter destination that shouldn’t be too busy
If you’re not looking to travel too far this winter, we recommend Pittsfield in Massachusetts. It’s an excellent place to visit if you want to be surrounded by snow but wish to avoid some of the bigger, more popular destinations. It’s relatively inexpensive and is seemingly an excellent spot for both skiing and ice skating, neither of which should be too busy. There are also some great places to escape from the cold, like the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art and Dottie’s Coffee Lounge, the latter of which offers incredible hot chocolate.
Puerto Iguazú, Argentina, can take your breath away in any season
It might be winter here, but in some parts of the world, it’s summer. Argentina is one such place, which is why somewhere like Puerto Iguazú might be worth visiting at this time of year. The Iguazú Falls alone are a reason to go here. Set around the border of Argentina and Brazil, the majestic waterfalls may well take your breath away. Of course, Puerto Iguazú has other wonders worth your attention, too. These include the Hummingbird Garden and the Surucua Reserve, where you can explore some incredible forest trails.
Whether you’re after sun, sand, and sea or wish to lose yourself in the snow, the best winter vacations for 2023 should have your every need covered.
