If you’re the kind of person who loves to explore national parks and be at one with nature, then you definitely need to hike through the Parque Natural de Serra de Estrela. Featuring various hiking trails of all lengths, many of them make their way through some of the most stunning pieces of scenery. From tumbling waterfalls to beautiful crumbling churches and laden forests, there’s so much to see, and it’s also a great place to camp if you want to save some money on accommodation and stay away from the hustle and bustle of the cities.

Located in the foothills of the Sintra Mountains, this resort town really does need to be seen to be believed. This place was once the vacation spot of countless members of royalty, and because of this, it is overrun with castles, palaces, and grand buildings that come with equally grand gardens. While these buildings themselves are well worth the visit, things get even better when you realize that the views over the ocean and the cities below are breathtaking. It’s perfect for a day trip, as it’s only around an hour away from Lisbon.

If you ever pass Barcelos on your journey around Portugal, then you’re going to want to go here on a Thursday. That’s because this small little town comes alive for its Feira de Barcelos market – and it’s one of the best open-air markets that the whole world has to offer. It’s amazing to see so many people rambling around, and it’s even better when you get to taste some of the delights of this country and this specific region. What could be better than that?
